The nominal 456 MW York Energy Centre (YEC) is located northwest of Newmarket, Ontario in the Township of King. Capital Power acquired its share in the York Energy Centre from Veresen Inc. in April 2017. The facility is jointly owned in a 50/50 partnership and is operated by Capital Power. York Energy Centre is fully contracted with the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator until 2032.

Capital Power is proposing equipment upgrades at the YEC. Learn more about this project.

Capital Power is proposing a battery energy storage system (BESS) installation on a parcel of land which Sky Betis owned by an affiliate of Capital Power and adjacent to the existing YEC. Operating independently of the YEC, the proposed facility would have up to 120 megawatts (MW) of power storage, with electrical energy output for up to four-hours. Learn more about this project.

Hydrogen Feasibility Study

In 2023, we were selected as recipients of Ontario Energy’s Hydrogen Innovation Fund. Through this funding, we’re exploring hydrogen blending at our Goreway Power Station, East Windsor Cogeneration Centre, and York Energy Centre using various mixes of hydrogen (from 5% to 15%). Engineering studies will be conducted at each site to evaluate the impacts on the natural gas turbine’s performance, maintenance, operability, emissions, and safety considerations, as well as how hydrogen could sky bet appbe procured, transported, and stored.

Community Investment

At Capital Power, we contribute to the communities in which we operate with the aim of building a sustainable future for all. We engage our neighbours, consider their interests and build real relationships. We aim to source supplies and services locally for our operations, as well as hire from the community.
